NYFF: BOND/360 ACQUIRES SUNDANCE DOC ‘THE SETTLERS’ FOR US RELEASE
AWARD-WINNING FILM TAKES A HARD LOOK AT THE WORLD OF ISRAELI SETTLERS ON THE WEST BANK
NEW YORK, September 29, 2016 – BOND/360 announced today it has acquired the exclusive US rights to THE SETTLERS, an astonishingly candid documentary chronicling the Israeli settlers living on the West Bank and the Israeli government’s silent complicity toward their presence since the first settlements in the aftermath of the Six-Day War. Written and directed by Shimon Dotan (Hot House), the award-winning film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and will soon screen at the 54th New York Film Festival. BOND/360 will release the documentary in theaters in the Spring of 2017, launching with an opening at NYC’s Film Forum.
Since the decisive victory of Israel during the Six-Day War in 1967, hundreds of thousand Israeli citizens settled down in the occupied territories of the West Bank. Benefiting from an unprecedented access with the pioneers of the movement of colonization and from the current, religious and secular colonists, The Settlers is an in-depth exploration of these communities, which take hostage the sociopolitical future of Israel and Palestine today.
“I am very much looking forward to be working with BOND/360 in releasing this film and in opening up a conversation with American audiences about the crucial issues that the documentary puts forward,” commented director Shimon Dotan. “I have never been involved in a project that so closely touches the most critical matters concerning the existence of the State of Israel.”
“The Settlers allows access to a small but active movement that is reviled by many and that subverts the political discourse, not only in Israel but across international borders. By historicizing the movement and contextualizing their actions, viewers gain insight into the motivations and justification,” says Elizabeth Sheldon, COO of BOND/360. “More controversial is the Israeli government’s tacit support of the settlers with their vision, which the film exposes to reveal the tension between verbal international condemnation and silent domestic complicity.”
BOND/360 acquired the rights from Tel Aviv-based sales company Cinephil. The deal was negotiated by Elizabeth Sheldon of BOND/360 and Philippa Kowarsky of Cinephil. The documentary first premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, followed by Luxembourg City Film Festival, DocAviv Film Festival, Biografilm Festival, and Sheffield Doc/Fest. The film will screen at the New York Film Festival on October 6 and October 7.
Following the theatrical run at NYC’s Film Forum the movie will expand nationally. The educational, digital and home video release is slated for 2017.
